Immersion Academy is designed to connect students outside of traditional ag programs—in STEM disciplines, marketing, and business management—to potential careers in the fresh produce and floral industry.
Following an opening reception, the event kicked off with a presentation by Bruce Taylor of Taylor Farms that gave students an overview of the industry from field to shelf to table, and showed them career opportunities throughout the supply chain. From there, students attended breakout sessions according to their areas of study, where they learned about different job descriptions and heard about day-to-day responsibilities from panelists.
Then, participants learned interviewing strategies from Kristen Reid of MIXTEC Group and gained advice from Diane Huth about developing their own personal brands to catch the eyes of potential employers. The day culminated in a series of “speed interviewing” meetings that matched students with hiring managers from participating companies. Closing speaker Kevin Wright inspired the audience to kickstart their careers in the industry.
We thank the participants, speakers and volunteers who made the first Immersion Academy a success. Stay tuned here for information about the 2018 event.
